VALUE STUDIES BEFORE BEGINNING TO PAINT

Here are the three steps I usually do before beginning the proper painting:

1) line drawing to get the placement of major shapes

2) paint a midvalue wash on all but the light shapes

3) go back in this midvalue and add in the dark shapes

This is a good road map to have along with a photo if you use one, right in front of you while you paint.
